Waxing FAQs

January 6, 2023

Waxing is one of the most popular personal beauty services, and with good reason. Waxing allows you to remove hair while ensuring that hair grows back slower and finer, leaving your skin smoother than ever. It’s no wonder why so many people prefer waxing to shaving! Many people, however, have some understandable reservations and questions about waxing.

If you’re thinking of making the switch to waxing or finding the courage to schedule your first appointment, read on! Here’s everything you need to know before a wax:

  1. Why is waxing better than shaving?

Waxing eliminates the chances of hair growing back coarser and darker. It will also be less irritating to your skin and cause much less discomfort. Waxing also does not cause ingrown hairs or razor bumps, a common issue amongst frequent shavers.

  1. Is waxing safe?

Yes! Waxing is very safe. Of course, if you have any concerns about waxing, speak to your doctor or your waxer to answer any questions you have.

  1. What should I do before a waxing appointment?

Exfoliate, hydrate, and moisturize! It will help prepare the area before the wax. Don’t over-moisturize or use products that may negatively affect the wax, like oils or gels. You can also take a warm shower to help open your pores and exfoliate your skin with a loofah.

  1. Does waxing hurt? Can anything be done to minimize pain?

Waxing will hurt a little, but most wax bars have developed methods and use products that will help minimize the pain as much as possible. For example, hard wax only adheres to hair and not the skin, which makes the waxing much less painful, particularly in sensitive areas. If you want to take things into your own hands, you can apply a numbing cream about 30 minutes before your appointment or take aspirin or ibuprofen.

  1. What should I do after my wax and in between appointments?

Exfoliate your skin again roughly 2-3 days after your appointment, and then continue to exfoliate 2-3 times a week until your next appointment. Avoid tight clothing, vigorous exercise, and tanning beds for the 48-72 hours directly after your appointment. Between appointments, continue exfoliating and using moisturizers to prevent ingrown hairs and bumps, and stay away from prolonged exposure to heat.

  1. How long should I wait in between appointments?

You want your hair to grow out long enough for the wax to attach, so wait at least four weeks before your next appointment.
