How to Plop Your Hair

October 1, 2021

Those with curly hair are all too familiar with how inconsistent curls can be: when your hair is wet, curls are sleek and defined, but when dry, curls can be a frizzy mess if not handled correctly! Though you can undoubtedly try finding the right combination of products to ensure your curls are in place, there is, fortunately, an easy method that will keep your curls consistently defined yet smooth. Plopping!

Plopping your hair is an easy method that involves only a few products and materials and zero heat. While it may take a few trial sessions to get it right, plopping keeps your wet curls nice and compact on top of your head so that it dries just as it looked wet. As experienced hairstylists, we’ve gathered some of the best tips and tricks to help you wet plop curly hair. Here’s a step-by-step list of how to plop your hair:
Get a hold of a long-sleeved t-shirt. This will yield the most consistent results, and the larger the t-shirt, the easier it will be to plop your hair! A t-shirt is preferred to a towel; traditional terry cloth towels will absorb too much moisture from your hair, and curls need that extra moisture, so they don’t become too frizzy or dry.
Before getting in the shower, find a flat surface such as a counter or your bed, and lay your t-shirt upside down with the sleeves and the neck-hole of the shirt closest to you.
Take a shower, using whatever products you typically use on your wet hair. Dry your hair to get rid of excess moisture, but make sure you leave your hair damp. Detangle your hair with a wide-tooth comb and apply any other products you may use on your wet hair.

Flip your head over the t-shirt, with your wet hair over and onto the center of the shirt. Press your head and your curls down onto the shirt like an accordion.
Take the bottom of the shirt (the part closest to your head) and begin wrapping it around your forehead and the nape of your neck. If you have enough fabric left on your t-shirt, you can tie the ends around the nape of your neck to keep it secure.

Take the top of the shirt (the part farthest from your head) and bring it toward your head, wrapping it around the rest of your hair and securing it around the nape of your neck to create a tight “bag” around your hair.
Take the sleeves and wrap them around your head, tying them in place to keep the shirt securely on your head. When you flip your head back upright, it should look like a nice but wet helmet on your head.
Dry your hair in this plopped style for as long as you see fit! Some people will plop for 5-10 minutes, 15-20 minutes, an hour, or even overnight. It all depends on what kind of curl you’re looking for (the longer you plop, the more defined your curls will be).
Unwrap the shirt, and voila! Beautifully curled hair that you’ve controlled.
