Those with wavy hair know just how difficult it can be to care for it. From the frizz and pseudo curls to the unknown factors of how your hair will turn out when you wake up in the morning, it’s no wonder that so many people with wavy hair have trouble controlling and caring for it!
Fortunately, there are some tried and true ways to take care of your waves that will keep your frizz at bay and maintain the look you want.
One of the most important things you can do for your hair is established a routine and general habits. Take a look at some of the best things you can do to take care of wavy hair:
Styling Products. Consider the styling products you’re using or not using! First, it might be time to invest in higher-quality products, even if they come with a higher price tag. These products will likely have a higher concentration of ingredients, so a little bit of product can go a long way. Styling products can have some seriously positive results on your hair, helping with moisture, frizz, and humidity. You can also get styling products to help you emphasize your curls.
Heat Protectant. Those with wavy or curly hair will be tempted to use heat styling products, particularly blow dryers and straighteners. That’s fine, but make sure you’re managing the heat correctly and taking measures to protect your hair from too much heat. When using a blowdryer, use a diffuser to control the amount of air on your hair. Use your tools at lower heat settings, and always use a heat protectant on your hair. If you’re using a curler to enhance curls, make sure not to wrap your hair too tightly around the barrel, as this can actually flatten your cuticle!
Overbrushing. When your hair dries, make sure you’re not handling it too much with your hands or with a brush! Overbrushing and overhandling will cause more frizz, dryness, and breakage. All things you want to avoid, especially with wavier hair!
Shower/Post Shower. Be careful when washing your hair in the shower; use warm water for washing and colder water for rinsing to add more shine to your hair. Use shampoo and conditioners made for wavy hair, and try not to overwash your hair. After showering, use a leave-in product for frizz or moisture. If you shower at night, sleep on a satin pillowcase to prevent breakage, and consider sleeping with your hair in braids to control the shape of your hair in your sleep.
Plopping. When drying your hair post-shower, you may want to try plopping your hair. Use a cotton shirt or pillowcase to lightly dry your hair instead of roughing it up with a regular towel. Tie it “on top” of your head and let it dry for 5-30 minutes, letting it set into a more manageable wave pattern.
